Destinations: Bondi Beach

I don't know about you, but when I think of Christmas I think of snow, cold, dark, candles, and family. A traditional Nordic-ancestry winter celebration.

But in the Southern Hemisphere, the temperate zones celebrate Christmas during their summer. And in Sydney, NSW Australia, a popular place to be on Christmas Day is Bondi Beach. It's not uncommon for the temperatures to reach the mid-80s, and red swimwear and Santa hats have become the Christmas clothes of choice! Even the lifeguards have been known to don Santa suits and reindeer ears.

Festooned dining tables are swapped for beach towels. A long simmering roast switched out for barbecues, many of them open to the public and ready for people to grab a plate and make new friends.

Although Christmas at the beach is a popular tradition amongst the locals, the number of Aussies has been supplanted on Bondi by travelers and backpackers, ready to get merry and, ahem, spread the Christmas cheer. A perfect end to a gap year, for sure!

Are you ready for a Christmas Down Under? Direct flights to Sydney from the United States are available from Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston. There are many hotels within walking distance of Bondi, but Coogee Beach is another nearby and often cheaper alternative.
