Christmas Travel Wish List – Helen, GA

Photo: ALPINE HELEN-WHITE COUNTY CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU

Around the Christmas holiday our family plans an outdoor day.  Many years ago, my grandmother decided we were all a bit too lazy.  We needed fresh air, and it was her way of keeping the holiday season spirit going.

A recent transplant to the South, friends and new acquaintances told me about the rustic Bavarian style village in north Georgia.  Helen is a popular destination year-round, but it is all about Kris Kringle this time of year.

Here’s a short list of family fun last minute this year or for you planners, a head start on next year.

  • Start your Appalachian adventure by visiting the Helen Welcome Center.  Their friendly staff are open 7 days a week.

  • Across the street (from the welcome center) is a mini golf course beautifully landscaped…and there’s an ice cream shop on premises when you finish putt-putting around.

  • A fall favorite activity, go for a horse drawn carriage ride around the festive surroundings.  Great for families or romantic occasions.

  • The great outdoors is calling.  A spectacular hiking area a short drive from the heart of Helen, Anna Ruby Waterfall is a peaceful hiking trail.

  • A winery tour in Georgia?  No need to jet away to France or Napa.  In the vicinity, more than ten wineries welcome guests to sample their liquid grapes.  Make a day, local tour operators are at your service.

  • Theme parks are your happy place, Helen has a rollercoaster!  The Georgia Mountain Coaster is a thrill a minute.

  • Hungry after all that action?  Little Helen has a rich foodie scene.  Traditional Bavarian fare is plentiful.  For a different flavor, your bunch will be happy to sample barbeque, Mexican food and what to German’s like to toast…beer, prost!

  • A full belly and a day’s adventures it’s time to rest easy.  Helen has a variety of lodging options.  Camping, glamping, bed & breakfast, rustic lodges, and a healthy selection of hotels, including a Bavarian castle.  Yep, a real castle.

  • When you visit Helen in warmer months, bring your float or rent a tube.  The Chattahoochee River flows right through town.  Around a bend is a family friendly waterslide park.

Year round, Helen is a family friendly, fun getaway.
